Quote from Carol Richards - "
Reaching Communities' long-term support has been crucial. Their seven years of backing has given us the stability to focus on what matters and the resources to develop services that truly meet our community's needs."

Why Support the Dovecote Children & Families Project

Dovecote Children & Families Project is a parent-led, community-rooted initiative supporting children and families in Blackbird Leys — one of Europe's largest social housing estates and one of the most disadvantaged areas in England.

For many families here, daily life is shaped by poverty, limited opportunities, and social isolation. We're here to change that.

A Community Facing Real Challenges

Blackbird Leys is among the 20% most deprived areas in England, with some of the highest child poverty rates in Oxford. Many families experience multiple barriers, including unemployment, low income, poor health, and limited access to safe, affordable activities for their children.

The population has grown rapidly — from 8,500 to around 13,500 in just two decades — increasing the need for trusted, accessible support. Families who are most socially excluded are often the hardest to reach, which is why long-standing, community-embedded projects like ours are essential.

What We Do

We provide early-intervention support that helps children thrive and families feel connected, confident, and supported. Our services include:

- Affordable out-of-school clubs and holiday playschemes for ages 4–10
- Stay-and-play sessions for children aged 0–4
- Inclusive activities for children with disabilities
- Opportunities for parents to build skills, confidence, and community involvement

Why It Matters

Positive, consistent support in childhood can transform a child's future. Our activities help children:
- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Form friendships and feel included
- Develop social and life skills
- Stay safe and engaged in positive activities

For families, we offer connection, encouragement, and practical support — creating a stronger, more resilient community.

Despite the scale of need, we receive no regular statutory funding. To continue offering high-quality, inclusive, and affordable services, we rely on grants, funders, and supporters who believe every child deserves the chance to thrive.

Dovecote Children & Families Project

Supporting children and families at the heart of the Greater Leys community. Every child deserves to thrive.
